For millions of years the manatee has lived in Florida's rivers, swamps, and shallow coastal areas. In 1973 they were designated an endangered species. The numbers of them today still decline due to Motorboats, dredging and other human interference. Typically 9 feet long, weighing 800-1200 pounds, manatees can reach a length of 13 feet and up to 3,000 pounds
