The green turtle is probably the best known sea turtle because of its historic food value and the amount of research that has been conducted on behalf of its preservation. Green turtles get their name from their greenish body fat, not from their overall color. The coloration varies from greenish or brown to black or gray, with dark markings on the carapace.
