Black grouper are typically found in the southern Gulf of Mexico, Florida Keys, Cuba, the Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean, but can be found anywhere in the western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil. Black grouper have an olive or gray body, with black blotches and brassy spots. The can grow up to five feet long and can weigh up to 180 pounds and live up to 30 years old. They begin life as a female and some change into males as they grow – usually between 11 - 14 years old.
